
Education: Graduated from Saint Francis University with a Bachelors in Computer Science (PA) in 2012
Experience: As a Player:
John began his volleyball career as a freshman at North Allegheny High School under legendary Coach Dan Schall. Quickly rising through the ranks, he earned a starting varsity spot as a middle blocker for three consecutive years. His high school career was marked by two WPIAL Championships, two third-place PIAA finishes, and top honors including First Team All-Section, All-WPIAL, and All-PIAA selections. In 2008, he was named Co-MVP of the WPIAL.
Outside school, John played club volleyball for Renaissance Volleyball Club, United, and Sandlot VBC (now PVC Sandlot), qualifying for USAV Nationals every year and earning an All-American Award in 2005.
John went on to receive a Division I athletic scholarship to Saint Francis University, where he broke into the starting lineup as a sophomore. He solidified his role as a full-time starter during his junior and senior seasons, contributing to the Red Flash
As a Coach: John’s coaching journey began unexpectedly at Cornell High School, stepping in as the emergency Varsity Head Coach. After gaining valuable experience, he joined Hampton High School as the JV Head Coach to further hone his skills and understanding of the game. Around the same time, in 2018, John entered the club coaching scene with Pitt Elite, primarily working with regional-level teams.
In 2020, John accepted the Varsity Head Coach position at Avonworth High School. Over five seasons, he led the team to one section title, four WPIAL Semi-Final Appearances, a WPIAL Runner-Up finish, and three State Tournament appearances—cementing the program as a consistent competitor. Concurrently, John coached the Revolution 16 Gray team, helping them secure both American and Freedom bids to USAV Nationals.
In 2024, John was a lead coach at the Renaissance Cranberry Gym, supporting athletes from the 14U to 18U levels and assisting across multiple teams throughout the season. Now entering his first year with Pitt United, John brings a wealth of experience, dedication, and leadership to the program.
Bio: Born and raised in Pittsburgh, John’s connection to volleyball spans decades. He’s been a player, coach, and regional referee since his freshman year of high school, shaping and supporting the sport across multiple roles. An athletic scholarship brought him to Saint Francis University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science — laying the foundation for a career in cybersecurity.
Since graduation, John has spent nearly his entire professional life at UPMC, now serving as a Senior Manager in the Cyber Security Department. His technical expertise and leadership continue to make a meaningful impact in one of Pittsburgh’s leading healthcare institutions.
Outside the office, John’s energy shifts to ice hockey — both playing and passionately following the Pittsburgh Penguins. He’s a devoted uncle to seven nieces and a proud dog dad to Penny, his energetic 1-year-old Basset mix.
In 2022, John brought his passion for volleyball full circle by founding Queens of the Burgh — a signature event dedicated to promoting girls volleyball throughout the Pittsburgh region. The project has become a deeply fulfilling endeavor, allowing him to connect with athletes, build community, and spotlight the sport he loves.
Favorite Volleyball Memory: Getting my first collegiate start against top ranked Ohio State University and helping my team beat them at home.
